Looking like the embodiment of an angry earth spirit seeking revenge, Mia approached Gideon coated in dust and soot head to toe. It had been a while since Gideon had tried to refuse her food. This plan had to work. She refused to prey on others to survive, and she needed to be out in the Crags to hunt CK. Volunteering to be a Grinder wouldnât give her the mobility and freedom of movement sheâd need to maximize her chances of success.
Gideon sat on a rock sipping the thick dark concoction that passed for coffee in Black Ice. A handful of other Grinders nearby kept a watchful eye, but the fear on their faces told Mia that they wouldnât dare oppose her if she turned violent. Her lethality had permeated the prison.
She wasnât going to turn into a Bravo. That didnât mean she couldnât use that fear to her advantage.
Never pass up an opportunity for supremacy over the enemy. In the end, the only thing that matters is winning the battle.
When her father had told her that, she doubted he was imagining her in a twisted prison with people whoâd given up all semblance of human decency. Her training had been geared toward being a soldier on a battlefield, not dealing with worthless criminals.
Mia frowned. She knew sheâd ended up in the prison by mistake. She might not be the only one. Flip didnât strike her as a hardened criminal.
She sucked in a breath. There wasnât time to get too concerned with others.
âYou look like shit, Rat Catcher.â Gideon motioned with his cup toward her. âWhen you first arrived, you were pretty enough to be a Tended. Your face is still nice, butâ¦â He shook his head. âWith your sleeves up, itâs nasty.â
âI have no intention of being a Tended,â Mia declared.
âNot when youâre walking around with wild hair, covered in dirt, bandages, and scars,â Gideon agreed. âI suppose they could clean you up, and the scars arenât all over your face, butâ¦â He shook his head. âMost guards want the complete untouched package. Now youâre stuck with us. Itâs about time you understood that and changed your attitude.â
âI know my situation. And I understand yours as well.â Miaâs hands tightened into fists. Knocking Gideon out wouldnât help her, no matter how good it might feel. This would require negotiation and manipulation, not violence.
âDo you?â Gideon crossed his arms. âThis day at the mud spa confirms what Iâve been hearing about what youâve been up to lately.â
âAnd what have you been hearing?â Mia pressed. âMany people spread rumors in this place without providing accurate sourcing. I heard one man say that Iâd been testing my shivs on Lost as part of an experiment.â
Gideon chuckled. âNah. Iâve been here a while. I get whatâs real and whatâs not.â
âAnd whatâs real in this case?â
âDid you think I wouldnât hear about you borrowing contraband equipment?â he asked, raising an eyebrow. He sipped his coffee. âThere was no way you were going to get that equipment into those tunnels without me hearing about it.
